Alberton hosts SA Bowls Pairs Championship

Alberton bowling club hosted the prestigious SA Bowls Mixed Pairs tournament which saw bowlers from all over South Africa competing.

THE prestigious Bowls South Africa Mixed Pairs Tournament was hosted by Alberton Bowling Club from June 20 to June 23.

The tournament sees top bowling pairs from all over South Africa come together for three days of furious bowls, culminating in a thrilling final on the fourth day. It was divided into two sections with 10 teams in each, all competing to be at the top of their sections to reach the final.

With the group stages done, Northern Cape Bowls and Boland Bowls were at the top and met for 21 ends that would determine the winners of the tournament. Twenty-one ends give both sides the opportunity to show what they are made of and keeping your cool through the long match will definitely help the team come out on top.

Mother and son team, Annelie en Charles Pieter Mathewson, took a lead early on in the match. They managed to hold on despite Santie and MP Olivier from Boland trying to keep the match as close as possible and keep their hopes alive. In the end Northern Cape Bowls won the match with a score of 27 to 19.

The final standings for the tournament were Northern Cape Bowls with a gold, Boland Bowls winning silver and Port Natal Bowls and Sedibeng Bowls sharing the bronze position.

Home team Ekurhuleni Bowls managed to end sixth in their section.
