WATCH: Chiefs and Sundowns in a face-off

Kaizer Chiefs vs Mamelodi Sundowns in the Shell Helix Ultra Cup.

LOCAL team Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns will have a face-off in the historic Shell Helix Ultra Cup at the end of July.

The two giants will meet at the home ground of the Amakhosi, FNB Stadium on July 21. Masandawana is the 2017/2018 Premier Soccer League, PSL, champions and takes on the local side of the South. This will be history in the making as for the first time these two teams will meet each other in a pre-season Cup play-off.

Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA) Dr Jacques Grobbelaar announced the new annual pre-season fixture on the domestic on the PSL calendar, which will see South Africa’s top teams go head-to-head for bragging rights at the Shell Helix Ultra Cup. The event rights holders are Stadium Management South Africa while the fixture itself will be sponsored by Shell Downstream South Africa and forms part of a three-year agreement between the two parties.

The first fixture will see Kaizer Chiefs take on current PSL champions Mamelodi Sundowns. A possible other two teams will take on each other in the latter part of the year and the winners of the two matches will play each other in November. The other two teams will be announced shortly.

The three-year agreement will have the possibility for extension by the title sponsor, while broadcast rights have been picked up by SABC and associate sponsorships signed with Vodacom View+. In addition, Gauteng Provincial Government will assist with logistical arrangements as the host province.

Speaking at the launch of the Shell Helix Ultra Cup, CEO of SMSA, Dr Jacques Grobbelaar said, “The concept to create a new annual fixture is not only an exciting idea, it also offers soccer fans another opportunity to see the best talent in South Africa on the FNB Stadium pitch, battling for the bragging rights to lift this trophy.

“For the first iteration of this fixture we have partnered with the Shell Helix Ultra team, as leaders in their industry, and we are aiming to bring an ‘ultra’ experience to the soccer fans who love these teams.”

“SMSA would also like to place on record our thanks to the PSL for allowing this fixture and are also very thankful to the chairmen of both these wonderful clubs and the assistance that both clubs have provided in order to make this event a possibility,” said Grobbelaar.

While the event is a new addition to the annual football calendar, SMSA, along with its stakeholders, have started the planning process for this event to ensure that spectators have an enjoyable experience at the stadium. Supporters who wish to attend the event are requested to take note of the following arrangements ahead of the match.

The match will start at 3pm, and the gates will open at 11am.

Tickets are only available from Computicket stores or at any Shoprite, Checkers, Checkers Hyper, House and Home or at selected OK Furniture and Usave stores.
