Alberton too good for Secunda

Hoërskool Alberton’s first and u-16 teams triumph over Hoërskool Secunda.

Hoërskool Alberton proved their mettle against Hoërskool Secunda on March 17. Both the first and u-16 teams had a stunning game against the visitors and managed to continue their winning streak of 2018.

At the onset of the u-16 game, Alberton started the stronger of the two teams and put the visitors under pressure. However, the backline defence of Secunda were up to the task. Alberton kept plugging away and were full of running.

The stalemate was finally broken when the Man of the Match, flyhalf Damian Holl, put a clever little grubber through the Secunda defence to find his lock Jayden Bouwer in a perfect position to gather and score in the corner.

Alberton played not to outpower their opponents but rather to outsmart them. This paid dividends when Tiaan Theron managed to pick up a well-placed kick from teammate Holl. He plucked the ball from under the opposing fullback and scored under the sticks.

IN THE CORNER: PJ van der Merwe scores his try for the first team game.

This lead to Secunda scoring two tries paved the way to two more tries from the home team. The end score was 22-19, a well-deserved win for the home team.

The first team’s game was clearly going to be a tight game from the start. Alberton immediately showed intensity but were unable to breach the solid defence if Secunda. Good tactical play by flyhalf Francios Myburgh brought a change when he placed a kick behind the line of defence and shortly arter PJ van der Merwe scored in the corner. Again a cleverly placed kick allowed the captain, Jonathon Potgieter, to score a try in the same right-hand corner. Myburgh managed to score another try shortly after halftime.

Defensive mistakes from Alberton allowed Secunda to strike back and put the game back into contension. A foul from both teams at separate occasions caused both teams to be penalised with yellow cards.

Sfundo Nkosi, Alberton’s number eight, managed to crash through for a try after a continued push from Allies within the opposing 22. This unconverted try meant that the opposing team would have to score twice. This lead proved unsurmountable despite Secunda scoring on the stroke of fulltime.

The end score was 24-20 in favour of the home team.

A truly great display from the Allies teams and a definite sign of good things to come in the season.
