The ESP Pool League to start in May

Matches are played on Thursdays and stats and results are sent out every Friday morning.

The Eastern Gauteng 8-ball Pool Association (formerly Eastern Transvaal) was formed in 1988 by Steve Sacks where players were selected from clubs in Alberton, Springs, Kempton, Edenvale and all suburbs in between.

Steve chaired Easterns Pool for more than 10 years, is a past president of SA Pool, was a member of the World Eight-ball Pool Federation (WEPF), as well as a past masters singles pool SA champion.

Thirteen years later he saw the potential for a Social Pool League (ESP) as many players didn’t want to play in national championships, but would rather play competitively against other teams and clubs for fun.

Provincial league pool is also quite costly where social league fees are under R5 per player for a whole night’s league enjoyment.

Eastern Gauteng Pool is allowing five Social League players (in each discipline) that do not currently play in the provincial league to partake in their trials for selection to play in the SA Championships.

The ESP League is in its 34th season with 400 players having played from 20 clubs in three divisions in the current season.

Matches are played on Thursdays and stats and results are sent out every Friday morning.

The finals shootout for the league will be played at 8’s Sports Bar, Main Road, Witfield on April 7 from 10am until about 6pm, followed by the prize-giving event if anyone is keen to attend. Entrance is free.

The new ESP League season starts on May 10 and any clubs, teams or players interested in getting involved should contact Steve on 082 257 0669 or send an email to esp@creativestuff.co.za

There is also a blackball league (the alternative discipline in pool) currently being formed on the East Rand, with the prospect of kicking off by the end of March.
