It has been a pretty good year for sports in Alberton.

IT has been a pretty good year for sports in Alberton. Here is a brief overview of 2017:

December:

*Two stalwarts of Karate, sensei Llewellyn Oosthuizen and rodukan Veronica van den Heever, bade their dojo, Shin-Gi-Tai Karate Academy farewell after 30 years (since the dojo’s inception); The sad good-bye aside, it was a good year for the academy in terms of successes at championships and the like.

*Devon Reinders gets awarded Clubman of the Year for Alberton Football Club after only his first year of being a member.

*Leyton Fourie (11) from Meyersdal steps up to the winner’s podium at the Rotax Mini Max Gauteng Regional, comes second at the Vortex Mini Rock Gauteng Regional Championship is awarded Victor Ludorum for the best junior competitor and gets his South African colours.

*Carlos Nunes (44) from Meyersdal wins another South African bodybuilding title and comes fourth at the world championships.

OUT YOU GO: One of the Gauteng Barbarians players takes a massive tackle in their veterans 10’s tournament.

November:

*Multiple World Masters Wrestling champion Chris Sutton from Alberton and two other Eastern Gautengers go to world championships.

*The Alberton Gymnastics Club enjoy their most successful year to date, winning 33 medals at the National Gymnastics Games.

*Laerskool Randhart dominate in sport, winning several titles for rugby, hockey, netball and cricket.

*Louis Liebenberg (18) from Hoërskool Marais Viljoen is selected for the South African Schools Golf Team.

October:

*Tyla Nepgen from Alberton High School wins gold at the South African National Equestrian Schools Association (SANESA) championships.

*Cobras Shotokan Karate Club rake in medals at the All Styles inter-club competition.

*Alberton Madalas rugby team host the National Golden Oldies tournament and come out on top over 33 other teams.

*JKA South Karate club wins 60 medals at the Karate Syndicate Mario Marques Championships.

*Alberton powerlifters, Adrian Smith and Rouxchelle Roux win several South African titles between them.

CLUBMAN OF THE YEAR: Devon Reinders with his award.

September:

*Jordan Morais (18) arrives back in South Africa after a tennis training tour in Portugal.

*Two boxers from Alberton Boxing Club, Vuyo Maphosa and Manolisa Mbatha win their bouts at a tournament held in Boksburg.

*Leyton Fourie (11) from Waterstone College wins the African Open Karting Championship.

*The Gauteng Barbarians 10’s Rugby team (with a large contingent of Alberton players) finish in the top two of the Tswane 10’s tournament.

*Ekurhuleni Chess host a rapid chess tournament at the Mall at Newmarket.

August:

*Gymnasts from the Alberton Gymnastics Club earn their Eastern Gauteng colours.

*Alberton Equestrian team qualifies for Gauteng Championships.

*Laerskool Randhart’s netball team gets voted the best in South Africa.

*Hoërskool Alberton’s u-15 team wins the Golden Lions title for big schools.

*Hoërskool Dinamika’s first team wins the Golden Lions title for big schools.

*Matthew van der Merwe from Hoërskool Dinamika is selected to play fullback for the Golden Lions u-16 team.

BODY PERFECT: Carlos Nunes with his many bodybuilding awards.

July:

*Dameon Venter from Alberton gets selected to play for the Golden Lions Rugby team.

*Ruben van Heerden from Alberton makes his debut for the Blue Bulls and is awarded the most promising player of the year award.

*Kallie Grung from Hoërskool Alberton represents the Golden Lions u-19 rugby team.

*Laerskool Randhart presteer weer, veral op netbal-, rugby- en Gimnastiek-gebied.

June:

*Athletes from the Alberton Athletics Club shine at the Comrades Marathon.

*Eden Park Secondary School produces two chess champions, Devon Dortley and Orapeleng Kenosi.

*Morgan Ziervogel from Alberton wins woman paddler (canoeing) of the year award.

WINNERS: Karatekas from the Shin Gi Tai Karate Academy obtained medals at the provincial championships recently. The provincials took place in Alberton where some of the karatekas also made the Gauteng East Team

May:

*Alberton Twisters Tumbling Club wins 45 top three medals at their first qualifying competition.

*Suné Steenkamp from Alberton Chinese Kickboxing receives a silver medal at the South African Kickboxing Championships.

*Ruben van Heerden from Alberton is selected for the u-20 Springbok rugby squad.

*Chukwuma Okoli from Valhall MMA and Fitness in Alberton wins the Fight Star Featherweight title.

*Alberton’s Bulpae Taekwon-Do win the overall prize at the National Taekwon-Do Championships.

*Nathan Dinning (14) from Reading Bowling Club takes the Single Men’s title at the Reading Bowls Championships.

*Hoërskool Marais Viljoen se wintersportspanne skitter by die PUK-Reeks.

*Gert de Klerk from the Alberton Boxing Club is selected as an official at the Elite Boxing Organisation.

*Alberton hosts Fight Star Mixed Martial Arts tournament.

April:

*Katy van Meter from Alberton places 51st out of 13 600 women at the Boston Marathon (USA).

*Pitbull Gym performs well at the Madness at Madison Avenue 2017 Powerlifting competition.

*Marais Viljoen remain unbeaten in NWU-Pukke series for rugby.

*Carla Hattingh en Thabo Viti van Marais Viljoen blink uit in atletiek.

*Star female bodybuilder from Alberton, Jessica Lovett returns to the stage after being out of action due to a motor vehicle accident

March:

*Declan Mason (14) from St. Declan’s School for Boys becomes the youngest Touch Rugby referee in South Africa.

*Kobus Beytell (67) overcomes several physical challenges and starts doing karate, despite being a multiple amputee.

*An ex-Marais Viljoen High School student, Sheldon Donnelly, sets a new u-90kg South African Deadlift record.

*Marais Viljoen’s u-16 cricket team wins the Easterns Coke T-20 Series.

*Laerskool Randhart dominate the annual relay inter-schools competition held at Alberton High School.

*Hoërskool Dinamika show off their star athletes.

FAREWELL: Rodukan Veronica and Sensei Llewellyn receive collages from the academy to thank them for their 30 years of dedication and service.

February:

*The Gauteng Barbarians 10’s Rugby team, with a large contingent of Alberton players make it to the Cape Town 10’s semi-finals.

*Laerskool Randhart wins the inter-schools athletics championships for the 12th year in a row.

*Alberton Shun Wu Tang Kung Fu Club joins the Chinese New Year’s celebrations.

*Jade Warmbach (9) from the Alberton Gymnastics Club qualifies for the Region 5 Competition.

*Promising young golfer from Alberton, Louvan Bekker (3) is introduced.

*Jarred Alder from Marais Viljoen hits 12 centuries for the 2016/2017 season.

January:

*Wim van Gils (73) and his wife, Ursula (66), make history when they win the Open Singles Bowls title for men and women at the Reading Bowling Club.

*Cobra Shotokan Karate dojo bring back several medals from national championships.

*Bernedette Wilson from Laerskool Randhart excels at cross country national level.

*The Golden Oldies Rugby Associations selects their team to go to Cape Town 10’s Tournament.
