A FIRED-UP Jabulani side from Soweto tried to make it tough for the first team from A Square Forklift Alberton Rugby Club to get going. The two teams played in the first round of the Golden Lions Rugby Union Pirates Grand Challenge league match at Soweto on April 22.

Ten minutes prior to halftime, with the score line at 7-0, instructions from the sideline to change the style of play benefited the Alberton side. Alberton enjoyed the oranges at halftime with the scoreline standing at 21-0. With the style of play adapted and a halftime chat, a new-look team took the field.

The Alberton lads played some champagne rugby, allowing the outside backs to finish off the hard work of the forwards.

Arno Smit could not put a foot wrong, even when moved to the unfamiliar position to left wing. He visited the try-line twice. For his efforts, the scrumhalf earned the Man of the Match award.

Bennie Botes, his halfback partner, converted six of the nine tries, an area Alberton has struggled with this season. The final score for the first teams were 57-5.

Alberton score: Tries: Benna Lotter, Andre Lombaard, Quinten du Plessis, Arno Smit (2), Jonathan Reed (2), and Jacques Van Wyk (2). Conversions: Bennie Botes (6).

Alberton’s next match will be played on May 6 at Alberton Rugby Club against Harlequins.
