Wings For Life World Run is for spinal cord injury research.

Wing For Life World Run will take place on May 7, 2017 in Pretoria.

THE Wing For Life World Run fourth edition will take place locally in Pretoria on May 7, 2017.

The WFLWR is a unique, global sports event that takes place in 24 locations across 23 countries simultaneously, in varying light and weather conditions. This is the world’s only race that has no finish line – instead, a catcher car chases down participants, ending their race as the car overtakes them until one male and one female World Champion remain.

No other running event has no finish line or set distance, allowing South Africans of all running abilities take part – some jog for 5km and some use the event to train for the Comrades Marathon.

Early bird entries can be submitted now until the December 15 cut-off. Entries are limited to 5 000 people, with the first 3 000 entries receiving a limited-edition Puma running shirt.

The cause is finding a cure for spinal cord injury. Absolutely 100% of all entry fees globally go to the Wings For Life Foundation, which funds research projects determined to improve treatment and therapies for spinal cord injuries and ultimately, a cure.

Paralympian, Laureus nominee and WFLWR Ambassador, Pieter du Preez, said: “Many spinal cord injuries are preventable, as common causes are road traffic crashes, sports injuries, falls or violence. Unfortunately, it’s mostly young South Africans in their prime who are injured in this way.”

“Many people with spinal injuries struggle physically, mentally and spiritually – some never come to terms with their new way of living. That’s why better therapies and eventually a cure, are so important.”

Around 2 300 South Africans joined over 130 000 runners for the third WFLWR last year, raising about R112 million for the Wings For Life Foundation.
