Pavlov boost preparations for world cycle

The 19th edition of the Cycle4Cansa raised R4 million to help in the fight against cancer.

PLANNING his route very carefully, the experienced Alex Pavlov snatched up the Bestmed Cycle4Cansa 50km mountain bike race prize on Saturday, August 20 in Sun City.

The 19th edition of the Cycle4Cansa raised R4 million to help in the fight against cancer.

For most of the race he was trailing the front riders, Henry Uys and Pieter Seyffert, but entering the final part of the race Pavlov powered his way past them to snatch up the win.

This was the best preparation for Pavlov’s World Championships bid. The 33-year-old will leave for the World Championships in Perth on Sunday, August 28.

He finished in a time of 1:45.10. Pieter Seyffert, last year’s winner, finished in second place in a time of 1:47.22, and Henry Uys came third in 1:48.54.

In the women’s race teammates Kim Le Court, Lisa Olivier and Carla van Huyssteen all crossed the line together in a time of 2:06.00.

“I’m delighted with the win. This is the fourth time I have finished on the podium in a handful of attempts,” said Pavlov. “I have been training hard for the World Championships, and go there in good form. This race suits me perfectly.”

Meanwhile in the 103km Elite road race which took place on Sunday, Nolan Hoffman finished first in a time of 2:18.13.

In the women’s race Charlene du Preez crossed the finish line first, ahead of Kim Le Court – Saturday’s mountain bike event winner – and Michelle Benson.
