Trophy stays in Alberton

A-SQUARE Forklift Alberton Rugby Club put their hands up by beating old rivals Union Rugby Club 32-5 to retain the Kevin de Klerk Trophy when they dished up champagne rugby on Saturday, April 23, on their home field.

The forwards did great work off of set pieces, to provide the backline with the platform to play some expansive rugby. Speeding winger Thorn Khumalo ran in for his first of three tries within the first 10 minutes of the much anticipated match. The players went into halftime with Alberton leading 17-5.

Union came out fighting in the first 15 minutes of the second half ensuring A-Square Forklift Alberton played at a slower pace. The home team quickly adjusted to the pace of the game and ran in two more tries getting that bonus point in the Pirates Grand Challenge.

Conversions: Renier Wiessener (three) and penalties (two).

Other results: all in favour of Alberton besides the third team: u.20 22-0, u.21 46-0, third 19-20 and second 24-12.
