More in store for teams in Nedbank Cup quarter-finals

Last eight clubs in Nedbank Cup to face each other.

THE remaining eight clubs in the 2016 Nedbank Cup were pitted against each other during the quarter-final draw held on the back of scintillating matches which had all the makings of another spectacular season so far.

The final eight sides are now just three wins away from claiming one of the biggest knockout prizes in South African domestic football and a chance to represent the country in African club competitions.

National First Division side Baroka FC have continued their giant-killing acts with victories over Premier Division sides Chippa United and Lamontville Golden Arrows to reach this stage of the competition. They are the last remaining side from outside the Premier Division in this year’s tournament, with coach Kgoloko Thobejani confidently promising his team will lift the trophy come the final on May 28.

Baroka are joined in the quarter-finals by some of the heavyweights of the local game, such as eight-time winners Orlando Pirates from the South, who booked their last eight place with a hard-fought 3-1 victory over Jomo Cosmos, while Mamelodi Sundowns ousted NFD side Mbombela United by the same scoreline.

Bidvest Wits were too strong for third-tier Magesi FC as they enjoyed a 6-0 success in Polokwane, with Daine Klate grabbing four goals to shoot to the top of the Nedbank Cup scorers chart for 2016. Polokwane City pulled off something of a surprise with an extra-time victory away at Platinum Stars, while Mpumalanga Black Aces, Free State Stars and SuperSport United will also appear in the quarter-finals.
