Netball league takes off with a sting

The NPL continues throughout April for eight weekends up until the end of May.

THE popular Brutal Fruit Netball Premier League (NPL) has commenced and the top teams had their first face-off over the weekend. All 10 franchises from the nine provinces were in action and played exciting netball in front of a sell out crowd at Heartfelt Stadium from Friday, April 8, to Sunday, April 10.

The Southern Stings (Western Cape), stormed to a 44-33 victory over the Golden Fireballs (Northern Gauteng), in their league match on Sunday. This signalled the final match of the weekend and was most probably the most exciting of the opening round of the league.

Chantelle Swart, who is only 19, was named Player of the Match.

Earlier, the North West Flames got their NPL campaign off to an ideal start, with a comprehensive 68-36 victory over the Eastern Aloes (Eastern Cape).

Although the Eastern Cape team were first on the scoreboard, the Flames dominated the match throughout. They led 21-7 after the first quarter and were 39-17 ahead at halftime.

The NPL continues throughout April for eight weekends up until the end of May. Matches are at the same venue this weekend, with the first match, between the Flames and the Mpumalanga Sunbirds at 18:00 on Friday, April 15.
