Trading punches: Boxers from the South make it through the championship

Boxers to represent Gauteng at nationals.

SOUTHERN boxers showed their skills at the recent championship and will represent their province.

The Gauteng Youth and Junior Championship was held on February 26 and 27 in Alberton.

Four boxers made it through to the Gauteng team and two officials from the South were also selected to form part of this team.

The boxers who are mainly from Booysens and South Hills Amateur clubs have paved their way to the Gauteng team by winning their bouts at the championship.

Mirnada Malajika, the current South African champion, won the Gauteng junior title in the 48kg. DJ van Heerden won the Gauteng junior title in the 75kg by beating his opponent, while Ricardo Malajika did the same in the 55kg division and won the youth title. Anthony Grobler won the 55kg junior Gauteng title.

Nicky Ness from Booysens and Billy Hurford from South Hills clubs have been selected respectively as the coach and manager of the Gauteng team.

The South African Youth and Junior Championship will take place from March 22 to 27 in Cape Town.
