Central Gauteng Athletics: Second last meeting a great success

Overall CGA men’s team walked away with the gold title and the women with the silver title.

Saturday, 20 February was a day of activity, as Central Gauteng Athletics hosted the second-last track and field meeting before the CGA provincial championships in March.

It was the first league meeting this year featuring the Phalula twins, who have moved onto longer distances on the track from their previous main events, which included 800m and 1 500m.

In the 5 000m, Lebo-Diana Phalula led the women by 300m and finished her race in 16:47:85, followed by Keneilwe Sesing, who clocked 17:37:63.

Returning from an injury, Lebogang Phalula finished third, in a time of 17:56:43.

She said this was just to test her endurance levels.

In the men’s 5 000m, Namaqua Nkhasi of Cool Running Athletic Club finished first in a time of 14:02:47, followed by Joel Marome of Nedbank in 14:17:29 and Gladwin Mzazi in third in 14:23:79.

Earlier on Saturday, a CGA team participated in the South African Marathon Championships in Buffalo City, East London.

In the men’s open men, Ntsindiso Mphakathi finished third, in 02:23:12, and in the women’s open category, Mapaseka Makhanya was second, in 02:51:32.

Overall, the CGA men’s team walked away with the gold, and the women with the silver.

CGA congratulates Lebogang Shange on breaking his own 20km record in a time of 01:20:06, on Saturday in Australia, and Sibusiso Nzima on finishing fourth, clocking his new personal best time of 02:11:42 and bettering his Olympics qualification time.

It was a great weekend for CGA and it is looking forward to yet another excellent day, when it hosts the last track and field league meeting this Saturday, 27 February, commencing at 13:00 using Programme Two.
