Drag racing champion shows colours

Gavin Wilkins has just been declared as the 2015 South African National Drag Racing Champion in the Senior Eliminator category.

GAVIN Wilkins a Glenvista resident, snatched up the 2015 South African National Drag Racing Champion Senior Eliminator title. He was declared the champion on Sunday, October 25, at the conclusion of the SA National Drag Racing Championship Series at the Tarlton International Raceway.

Wilkins’ notorious nitrous 598 big block Ford Mustang certainly gave him the edge. Piercing the turbulence, the time honoured tactic to overcoming pitch, roll and yaw of any 1320ft journey, Wilkins proved yet again that he could easily turn the Mustang into an instrument of psychological warfare.

The march towards the title commenced in March and concluded with Wilkins finishing with a landslide victory of 241 points.

Despite being somewhat frustrated over the advent of the new Tarlton Sportsman’s Tree, during the course of the season, he managed to shatter the B-Altered record by setting a personal best elapsed time of 7.68 seconds along with a whopping best speed of 304kph over the quarter mile. This clearly affords him the extra title of being the acclaimed driver of the fastest nitrous-assisted car in Africa.

His winning streak started in 2012 when he took the coveted trophy at the conclusion of the season. He repeated this phenomenal triumph in 2013 and at the 2014 finale he again took the prize cup with a brilliant score of 266 points. Not content with that, he also propelled the car to an extraordinary finish taking the Northern Regional Drag Racing Championship cup with a mammoth 439 points.

Along with his crew, Gavin will be a contender for the 2016 National Drag Racing Championship series.
