Xina selected for SA team

Xina Eksteen, a Marais Viljoen student, is representing South Africa in ring ball.

ALBERTON – Xina Eksteen, a learner from Marais Viljoen High School, was selected for the u.15A South African ringball team.

Xina represented the Ekurhuleni North district at the South African National Ringball Championships which took place in Margate from October 3 to 11. Ekurhuleni North includes Alberton, Benoni, Boksburg, Edenvale, Germiston, Kempton Park and at present is the largest schools union.

Over 2 000 ringball players from over 20 districts competed at the championships and more than 700 games were played on 19 courts. Each team played a minimum of seven games.

Teams will take part in exhibition matches in Middelburg, Mpumalanga, on October 24 and then again on November 7 in Kempton Park. Teams which will go through to Namibia in December to play against Mauritius, Namibia and India, will only be announced after these games.

Ringball is a traditional South African family sport which has been played since 1907. It was adapted from basketball to accommodate women and was played under the South African Basketball Union from 1907 to 1916. Korfball was the official school sport at schools until the early 1980s when netball was introduced into schools.
