A-Square-Forklift Alberton knocked-out

A-Square Forklift Alberton was again knocked-out in the semi-final by Wits.

ALBERTON – In a repeat of the Bailey Cup semi-final in the Golden Lions Grand Challenge competition eight years ago, A-Square Forklift Alberton was again knocked-out in the semi-final by Wits.

Wits University proved to be too strong for A-Square Forklift Alberton. However, the side captained by Anthony Kapp in the absence of league captains Kyle Wood and Ryno Brits, held out against the strong students especially in the first half.

Though Wits opened the scoreboard with a soft try in the second minute, the young Alberton team played good constructive and positive rugby to trail only by 3-15 at halftime.

Schoolboy fly half Bennie Botes, who also scored a try earlier in the season for Dinamika in their 20-5 derby victory over Hoërskool Alberton, succeeded with one penalty goal.

The second half, however, was a completely different story with home side Wits dominated in all aspects of the game. The final score was 37-3.

In the final, Wits faced Randfontein, which eliminated Police in their semi-final, and managed to beat them narrowly 29-23.

On the same night, the big Grand Challenge Pirates Cup final was contested between UJ, which defeated Pirates narrowly 35-28, and Pukke, which eliminated Raiders 32-7 in the semi-finals.

UJ was victorious in the main cup final with another 29-23 final victory to emulate their Golden Lions sevens trophy victory earlier this year in February at A-Square Forklift Alberton Stadium.

UJ made a clean sweep of all the finals on the night, with the only exception the thirds where Pukke, coached by Henry Stewart and the legendary number 10 Springbok from Alberton Andre Pretorius, outplayed UJ thirds by 22-14.

A club to watch in the future is Diggers from Randburg which massacred Harlequins from Krugersdorp by 44-5 in the third competition, the Senior Grand Challenge final.
