Ekurhuleni’s newest SA champion

Grant Fourie was rewarded for his hard work and perseverance when he claimed the SA junior welterweight title at the Emperors Palace Young Guns Box and Dine Tournament in July.

ALBERTON – In arguably the best fight of the night, Fourie fought his way through an impressive performance from defending Alberton champion, Warren Joubert, to snag a title sought after by many a boxer.

Fourie has had to overcome plenty obstacles in his career and alluded to his struggles in an interview with Caxton reporters after the tournament.

“It feels great to have won the title as it has been a long journey. I came back to the ring only last year, after I took a year off because I suffered from glandular fever. It is an illness that attacks your immune system and has different symptoms making some feel tired while others suffer from headaches. I kept falling ill; we would train and I would get very sick and be unable to fight on a continuous basis. It was just better for me to take a break as I kept pushing my body too much. At some point it got so bad that I considered retirement.”

This previous SA amateur boxing champion and nephew of the great Pieré Fourie, trains at Harold Volbrecht’s boxing gymnasiums and is sponsored by DTF Security and Adidas Fight Wear. Ekurhuleni Veterans Boxing Association (ERVBA) situated in Primrose, Fourie’s home town, is part of his fan-base and support him at every one of his Emperors boxing outings.

Fourie believes in self-discovery and recently completed a life coaching course through York Academy in Midrand.

His wife Monique and daughters, Bree (7) and Demi (3), are proud of Ekurhuleni boxing’s pride and joy.
