Alberton’s emotional win over Carletonville

Alberton High School’s u.16 team won the middle schools Golden Lions final against Hoërskool Carletonville this past Saturday, July 25.

AUCKLAND PARK — Emotions ran high in Auckland Park when the u.16 team of Alberton High School won a tough rugby match against Hoërskool Carletonville 19-12, to claim the title of middle schools champion in the Golden Lions rugby championship.

On July 25 spectators, wearing blue, came out in their masses to support the Alberton boys and pupils dressed in their school uniforms proved that school spirit still exists. Everybody was there to share in the exciting atmosphere and when the final whistle blew, the Alberton players and their coaches could not hold back their tears.

IT’S MINE: Alberton High School’s Dylan Palk holds onto the rugby ball with all his might as Hoërskool Carletonville players take him to the ground.

“It was a very emotional moment not just for me but for the whole team when we were crowned winners and were able to hold the trophy. I even cried,” said Zandré Engelbrecht, team captain. “We were happy and sad at the same time because we have been a team for the last three years and now our time together has come to an end. Luckily we have taken tons of photos to remember and cherish this moment forever.”

Coaches Chris Brand and Chris Denyssen explained that this moment would not have been possible if it was not for the hard work and dedication of the players.

“They worked and trained very hard on and off the field. In the end all this hard work payed off and to us as coaches this is the perfect way to bid a good farewell to these boys,” said Brand.

NOT GOING ANYWHERE: Alberton High School’s rugby players try to stop the Hoërskool Carletonville players from reaching the tryline.

He said he told the players to enjoy the game, but to remember that no one wants to lose.

“This is your final chance to give everything that you have worked so hard for,” he said.

Denyssen said the boys’ parents were phenomenal and showed their support throughout the years.

“The parents celebrated the win with us and are excited to see the trophy come home to Alberton for the first time since 2013.”

GOING FOR A TRY: Dylan Palk from Alberton High School on his way to score points for the team in their final against Hoërskool Carletonville.
