Xerox Golden Lions, EP Kings on top in junior competitions

Xerox Golden Lions still top the league.

XEROX Golden Lions suffered a close 24-19 defeat to the DHL Western Province in Cape Town on Saturday, but remain top of the standings in the u.21 Absa Currie Cup provincial championships.

The Vodacom Blue Bulls overcame the EP Kings in Port Elizabeth 39-20 and the Cell C Sharks had too much firepower for the Leopards, beating them 46-24 in Durban over the weekend.

In the u.19 Absa Currie Cup provincial championship, the EP Kings toppled another big name, this time the Vodacom Blue Bulls. The victory means that the Kings are still top of the log with four wins in four matches.

In the other clashes, the DHL Western Province edged past the Xerox Golden Lions, while the Cell C Sharks remain winless after being beaten in Durban by the Leopards.

DHL Western Province vs Xerox Golden Lions

Three first half tries laid the foundation for the DHL Western Province win over the Xerox Golden Lions in a match played at City Park in Cape Town. The home side scored their first try in the opening minute, but the visitors struck back immediately with a five pointer of their own. WP then added two more tries as they gained steady ascendency. The second half saw the Golden Lions fight back and a late try by Cyle Brink had them in touch of an unlikely victory but WP managed to hold on to their lead ensuring a good win.

Nine tries in Durban confirmed the entertainment value of the match between the Cell C Sharks and Leopards, with the home side scoring six tries as they finally found the rhythm they were looking for earlier in the season.

The first half proved to be a hard-fought session with the first try only being scored after 30 minutes of play. The home side kept the scoreboard ticking with the accurate boot of flyhalf Innocent Radebe winning the match 46-20 with a flurry of tries in the second half.

EP Kings vs Vodacom Blue Bulls

The Vodacom Blue Bulls delivered a strong second half performance in the Wolfson Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Friday to beat EP Kings 39-20. The home side started strong and a yellow card early in the half did not do the Blue Bulls any favours. The visitors gradually wore the EP side down and in the end scored a solid but hard fought win. EP Kings remains winless but will be happy with their competitive performance.

n In the Absa u.19 provincial championship, the EP Kings continued their good start in the competition, beating the Vodacom Blue Bulls 24-15. After their defeat against the EP Kings last week, DHL Western Province got back on the horse quickly and beat the Xerox Golden Lions in Cape Town 32-27. Leopards secured an away win over the Cell C Sharks in Durban with 37-40.
