Lions raise R165000 for Tries for Teachers

Emirates Lions made a major contribution towards the Tries for Teachers campaign.

THE Emirates Lions visited the Vodacom ICT Centre at the Orlando Pirates Centre in Soweto to see what difference their 2015 Vodacom Super Rugby tries made in the Tries for Teachers campaign.

The 2015 Vodacom Super Rugby tournament was used as a platform to launch the  initiative that supports the training of teachers in South Africa. For every try scored by a South African team, during the season, Vodacom donated R5000 towards the campaign.

One half of the leading try-scorers for the Lions team, Ruan Combrinck, spearheaded the Lions contingent to Soweto with Courtnall Skosan, Alwyn Hollenbach, Ross Cronje, Anthony Volmink and Mark Richards in tow. The rugby players along with the centre’s trainees were involved in hands on training with a CISCO technician as they were shown how to assemble computers. The Vodacom ICT Centre in Soweto is one of 61 centres that have been established countrywide and offers teacher development training and youth and community programmes.

Thanks to their 33 tries this season, the Lions added a total of R165 000 to the R1 million that was raised towards the initiative. South African teams managed to score a total of 183 tries during the season and raised R915 000.

Vodacom decided to add a further R85 000 to the initiative so that R1 million could be donated to make a difference in the lives of others.
