JCC hosts 40km obstacle challenge

Johannesburg Canoe Club hosts a race on the Upper Klip River.

THE JOHANNESBURG Canoe Club hosted a race on the Upper Klip, on Sunday, July 5.

The 40km training challenge, with numerous obstacles, started at Buksies Holiday Resort and meandered through Walkerville, Daleside, to finish in Henley-on-Klip. Some boats were damaged on a weir wall, others on rocks in a waterfall, and the route included a dead tree forest to be negotiated.

Some places where the boats could not pass through, due to low water levels, forced the paddlers to resort to portage, running past numerous obstacles and low level bridges.

All in all this was a challenging, demanding and tough river race.

Ryan Simonato and Louise Pieterse, who are members of the JCC, finished the 40km race in a time of 3:28, as the first mixed double (male/woman combination).
