Sport stars shine

Excelence and appreciation for the talent of sport stars from Ekurhuleni was rewarded at the annual Ekurhuleni Sport Awards on Wednesday, May 27.

ALBERTON – The ceremony, which was held at the Alberton Civic Centre, honoured sportsmen and women who represented South Africa at international level.

The awards are presented by the office of the Ekurhuleni MMC for sport, recreation, arts and culture, Dorah Mlambo, for and on behalf of the executive mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele.

Three finalists were selected in each category out of the 132 nominations received, and the winners were announced during the glittering ceremony.

The following Alberton sportsmen and women were selected as finalists in the various categories:

Junior Sportswoman of the Year: Lukisha Marion Schalk (artistic gymnastics).

Sportsman of the Year (people with disability): Gerald George Rex (cycling) and Dylan Ronald Da Silva (triathlon and cycling), and

Sportswoman of the Year: Bernadette Coston (hockey) and Janine van Wyk (football).

The winner of the Sportsman of the Year (people with disability) was Gerald George Rex.

He was selected for the SA team that took part in the World Cycling Championships in Greenville, USA, where he obtained fourth position in both the road race and time trial, and was ranked number three in his category.
