Development boxing takes form

The tournament will take the form of a Box ‘n Dine and will be held at South Hills Recreation Centre.

The “Own the Night” boxing tournament will provide an opportunity for development boxers to establish their professional careers.

The tournament will take the form of a Box ‘n Dine and will be held at South Hills Recreation Centre this Friday, May 22.

The event will start at 18:00 and live boxing coverage at 21:00.

The main fight of the evening will feature Cebo Ngema and Khayalethu Mbhedje over eight rounds in the bantamweight division. Ngema makes a comeback since suffering point loss to Toto Helebe for the national bantamweight title in February last year.

The event will have an action packed bill. Apart from the main fight, the undercards are: Ronald Malindi will take on Tebogo Setseke in the bantamweight over four rounds, while Koos Sibiya will face Hamisi Gulaka from Tanzania over six rounds in the junior-lightweight division. Valentino Bwando vs Phumlani Majola, junior welterweight over four rounds, Sydney Maluleka vs Petros Mahlangu, featherweight over four rounds and Thato Bonokoane vs Victor Hlangweni, featherweight over four rounds.

Moonlight Boxing Promotor Curtis Moonsamy will be staging this tournament, which is the first since receiving his license in 2014.

“This will be a historical event as it will be broadcast by a community TV channel which was never done before. We also received the blessing City of Johannesburg and we hope to continue with this kind of tournament, one per month,” said Moonsamy. The next tournament will take place in Kwa-Zulu Natal.

“I had intended introducing myself to the fight public last year but I could not due to failure of securing funding,” he said. “Fortunately, we managed to get the City of Johannesburg on board this year and will hit the road running.”

Moonsamy said that it was the plight of professional boxers who are still in the development stages which brought him to boxing.
