Canoe schools sprints showcase talent

The SA School Sprint Championships was also an opportunity for South African Sprint selection.

SOUTH African interprovincial interschool competition known as the SA Schools Sprints competition took place on April 30, and May 1 and 2.

The races where pupils representing various schools throughout South Africa compete in 2 00m, 500m and 1 000m sprint canoe races, and the long distance sprints of 2 000m for twelve years and under and 5 000m for older juniors were hosted at Roodeplaat Dam in Pretoria for 2015.

The races per age group in sprint lanes were for K1 disciplines (Single Kayak) for all ages from u.8 through to 18 years, while those u.14 to 18 years also compete in K2’s (Doubles) as well as in the K4 Olympic Discipline.

The SA School Sprint Championships was also an opportunity for South African Sprint selection to the Junior World Sprint Championships, July 23 to 26.

Alex Masina from Forest Hill High School in Turffontein, who is a member of the Wemmer Pan based Johannesburg Canoe Club was the Victor ludorum winner in the u.16 category and in fact the champion of the tournament as he achieved 100% points – winning every one of the races he participated in.
