Two Oceans ultra-marathon

Barbara Luckemeyer was the first runner from Alberton home in this year’s ever-popular Two Oceans ultra-marathon over 56 km in the Cape Peninsula.

She achieved a coveted Sainsbury medal in her debut Two Oceans ultra-marathon in a good time of four hours and 44 minutes. This was an outstanding performance, taking into consideration that she is only in the early years of her competitive running career. The overall women’s winner Caroline Wostmann from Wits University in Nedbank’s green colours achieved her winning time (3:41:18) only in her seventh year of running which started in 2009.

First Alberton men to cross the finishing line were Alberton’s star 160 km medallists of last year Gavin Pansegrouw and Shane van Dam for their second and fourth medals respectively in five hours and 26 minutes, for the 104km shorter than 160km distance, proving their all-round ability on any road distance.

The good story to tell, however, does not end there, as Frans Nxumalo finished his 20th Two Oceans 56km ultra-marathon in six hours and 58 minutes. What a great performance for a masters’ athlete.
