Alberton boxer competes for SA Junior Welter title

Hurricane Box 'n Dine full of excitement.

A slightly rustic performance still gave Warren Joubert the upper hand when he clinched the vacant South African junior welterweight title.

In an action-packed “Hurricane” Box ‘n Dine staged at Emperors Palace and presented by African Ring in conjunction with Golden Gloves Promotion on Monday April 13, Southern boxers once again showed their mettle.

The vacant SA junior welter title was contested by Joubert, who now fights under his new trainer, Colin Nathan from Hot Box Gymnasium, and Lungisa Jikani, who came all the way from the Eastern Cape. Both gave a good account of their boxing skills, but it was Joubert who carefully outboxed his opponent with good solid punches.

Joubert, who has always been a techinical boxer and now resides in Alberton, showed that he still needs some time back in the ring, before he will come to his right. But both boxers showed respect to each other, and it was a good showdown in front of once again a sold out crowd. The judges awarded Joubert a points decision of 118/110, 119/110; 118/109.

The fight of the evening belonged to young Southerner Paul Kamanga and Stone van Aswegen from Boksburg. Both boxers did not give an inch, but it was the Southerner with his more superior physique who proved he was no pushover. He controlled the fight smartly with the help of his trainer and former boxer, Anton Gilmore from Box Office in the South.

Kamanga showed that he is a real crowd favourite, and with his big right hand which took Van Aswegen to the canvas, he was rewarded with another win to take his record to 15-0.

The judges awarded him the fight with a points decision of 80/71; 80/71; 80/71.

Coming back from almost a two-year layoff, Flo Simba did not remotely showed that he was ready for bigger fights, but under the watchful eye of Harold Volbrecht, he will most probably come to his right in the ring once again. In a rustic performance, Simba beat Big Ben Marcel Malumba from DRC Congo by TKO in the fourth round 1:19.

Other results: Johnny Muller won by TKO third round 2:45 against Donald Kapamba; Dee Jay Kriel won by TKO third round 1:48 against Clever Modingi; Roman Zhialauov from Russia, who will be seen in the June 6 tournament, won on a points decision against Walliers Baloi 58/53; 56/54; 56/54.
