Boxing judge honoured

A big honour has been bestowed on East Rand boxing judge and referee Jaap van Nieuwenhuizen, a honorary lifelong member of Alberton Indoor Sport Centre.

ALBERTON – Jaap, who entered the world of professional boxing in 1958 as a judge and referee, recently went to England to be one of the judges in the IBF world title fight between SA’s Zolani Tete and Paul Budler from England, where Tete was victorious.

Jaap deserved this honour, as he went through the ranks from the lowest gloves official up to the highest level of boxing. He was honoured in 1991 by the disestablished Alberton Town Council, with a civic merit award for sport, and is still after all these years an integral part of the proceedings in the professional boxing ring at big tournaments in the country.

Behind every man there is a woman, and his wife Rika stood behind him through all his boxing ventures. She is currently serving as committee member of the East Rand Veterans Boxing Association.
