Robert wins President Award

Exactly 47 years after his biggest night in the boxing ring, boxing great Robbie Trott has been awarded with the coveted President’s trophy of the East Rand Veterans Boxing Association.

ALBERTON –  Robbie Trott is remembered in South African boxing history for that memorable night in November 1967, when he fought on the undercard for the big fight between former European welterweight boxing champion Carmelo Bossi, who died in April last year at the age of 74, and Willie Ludick.

Robbie Trott was in the ring against 1973 world champion Arnold Taylor, with another world champion boxing giant Rocky Marciano as the referee.

It was indeed a moment to be remembered when Koos Lourens handed over the well-deserved President’s trophy to this wonderful man, who is the epitome of boxing longevity. Other award winners on ERVBA’s night of the boxing stars closing prize-giving, were:

* The Chairman’s trophy went to Bennie Nortman and a special award to Lettie de Bruyn, the support behind champion Gerrie de Bruyn, who died at the age of 74 in March 2014. * Veteran’s Association personality of the year: Dawid van Nieuwenhuizen, presented by amateur great Hennie Jordaan.

* Veteran of the year: Johnny Carbis junior, son of 83-year-old Johnny Carbis senior, Alberton’s oldest living SA champion as far back as 1953.
