De Villiers and Steyn mark golden decade of Test cricket

AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn have been playing for the Proteas for ten years.

AB de Villiers and Dale Steyn celebrated ten years of Test cricket on the opening day of the first Sunfoil Test against the West Indies at SuperSport Park, December 17. The pair made their Test debuts in 2004 against England at St Georges Park, also on December 17.

“It’s gone quickly,” Steyn said. “ We have been around the world to so many places, and what amazes me is that I have only been to one 50-over World Cup in ten years. Ten years have flown by, I don’t know what will happen with us or my career in the next three or four years. It’s been a great 10 years, I have loved every minute of it. It has been hard. I’ve enjoyed it, but I’m looking forward to what will follow; it’s not over yet.”

It seems a fitting coincidence that the pair should celebrate this milestone at the venue where their first-class cricket started. They made their debuts for Northerns against Western Province in 2003 as budding 19-year-olds, and have risen to the top echelons of World Cricket in the last decade.

“It certainly does feel at home,” De Villiers said. “ I always get a good cheer from the crowd here. This is where my career started, and I will never forget it. The fact that I don’t play here often hasn’t changed that; it’s always a huge honour playing here. I have played some of my best knocks at SuperSport Park. I’m really looking forward to this Test match.”
