Chiefs set up Southern derby

Kaizer Chiefs set up another big Southern derby when they beat Platinum Stars on Sunday August 24 to advance to the MTN8 finals.

JOHANNESBURG – MTN8 semi-finals took place over the weekend of August 23 and 24 when the two Southern based clubs, Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs, met their opponents on home soil.

The finals of the MTN8 will take place on September 20. The venue will be announced.

The drama started when Orlando Pirates played Bidvest Wits on Saturday, recording a 5-1 aggregate over the two legs.

Bidvest Wits coach Gavin Hunt felt his side deserved more than they got, after losing 3-1 (5-1 on aggregate over the two legs), to Orlando Pirates.

“Pirates weren’t in the game, let’s be honest, we were pushing and throwing everything at them and they broke away, but all in all, we deserved more than we got, that’s for sure.

“But all credit to them, two world class goals, if Majoro scores one like that in his life again, he’ll be lucky, but I thought we were the better team, but you got to give them credit, to breakaways, two goals.”

On Sunday Kaizer Chiefs took on Platinum Stars at the FNB Stadium. The Amakhosi dispatched Dikwena 3-0 in the second leg semifinal, thanks to goals from George Maluleka, Reneilwe Letsholonyane and Katlego Mphela.

For Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter it was very much a case of mission accomplished as his side beat Platinum Stars 3-0 on Sunday to secure a 5-0 aggregate win over the defending champions.

“The players got down to business. I think we should have been two or three nil up in the first 15 minutes, but we didn’t take those chances. When we got the goal, I think it was difficult for them mentally, and we got more and more chances on the transition because they threw caution to the wind.”

The two Southern-based clubs will now meet for the second time round this season to set up another derby between the two rivals. The first derby of the season was won by Orlando Pirates, when they beat Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Black Label Cup.
