July in Jozi proves to be a great success at Turffontein Racecourse.

II’S official; Gautengers have inked their stamp of approval on the July in Jozi event. The annual event, in its third year, took place at Turffontein Racecourse this past weekend to accommodate all lovers of fashion and horseracing who couldn’t make it to the Greyville Racecourse in Durban.

On Saturday July 5, Turffontein Racecourse was abuzz with activity, when a crowd of people in excess of 10 000 pointed their compass South and joined in on the Durban July in Jozi vibe. The event was streamed live on a big screen, with eight races additionally run at Turffontein racecourse.

Phumelela can confirm that takings from the July in Jozi this past weekend set a new record. The on-course budget for the day was up 25 per cent year on year.

Operations Manager Alfie Little said: “The Jozi people have spoken and without a doubt, July in Jozi is here to stay. Our hospitality packages were sold out days before the event, and on the day two empty decks which were not pre-booked were quickly snapped up by the public.”

Jozi people braved the chill and came out to play. On the day the Turffontein Racecourse events team ran a best dressed competition and had lucky draws. Three lucky people walked away with clothing vouchers from Rixon Shop in Illovo totalling R7 000, while the best dressed who was clad in an Elvis Presley look won a table for 10 to the next racing event.
