Alberton loses first game

Alberton may have to endure several knocks back from those leaps forward, before they start to really flourish.

ALBERTON – Lady luck and everything good on their side was not in favour of A-Square Forklifts Alberton, when they lost their opening league fixture to Wanderers as the Impalas game was rescheduled for later.

The home side had to face Wanderers with a very young and inexperienced side, without almost half of the team’s experienced stalwarts due to injuries.

Contrary to expectation, underachievers don’t immediately perform a dramatic U-turn when they play in the big league. However, the young Alberton side is brimming with promise and talent but is short on experience. It is a reality that it takes a series of bounds before thoughts on challenging the big guns can be entertained.

Judging from the performance against Wanderers, Alberton may have to endure several knocks back from those leaps forward, before they start to really flourish. Though Alberton scored three tries against Wanderers’ eight in the 17-51 defeat, they have never given up. Wanderers opened the scoreboard in the seventh minute 7-0, but left wing Thabo Ntshanga’s try four minutes later made the score 5-7. Following Thabo’s second try and three more tries plus a penalty from Wanderers, the scoreboard read 10-27 against Alberton at halftime.

Playing catch-up rugby does not really work, and Wanderers ran away in the second half to lead 44-10, before flank Clinton Groenewald scored the try which Ryno Brits converted 17-44. Another try in the dying moments of the game put the final score on 17-51 against Alberton. Following last weekend’s away fixture against Roodepoort, Alberton faces Union at home this Saturday, May 24.
