Union edges Alberton in their own backyard

More rugby this weekend at Alberton Stadium with Alberton’s first opponents the strong Rustenburg Impalas.

ALBERTON – In  A-Square Forklifts Alberton’s last friendly prior to the start of the league season and the Vodacom Cup fixture at Alberton, Union’s win of 13-11 over Alberton at Union has given Alberton lots to ponder.

Union started aggressively with their first converted try within the first minutes of the game and showed that they were not going to give it up easily. Alberton hit back with a penalty by Ryno Brits to put the scoreboard at 7-3, but after 20 minutes Union increased the lead to 10-3. Just before halftime, Union received two yellow cards, but could not apply enough pressure to succeed.

After another Ryno Brits penalty in the second half started at 6-10 against Alberton. The visitors dominated that half and applied the pressure before Union could increase their score to 13. Alberton’s aggressive onslaught resulted in a try by Kenneth du Plessis to bring the final score to 13-11. Although Alberton was in control the last 15 minutes Union’s defence was ruthless. The lesson that Alberton learnt from the outing to the South was clear. The more composed, smarter and ruthless side will emerge as the winner in the league fixtures, which will start on May 3.

Alberton’s first opponents are the strong Rustenburg Impalas, who won the SA Community Cup for open club teams with their 13-11 victory over Roodepoort in the final on Family Day last week. Provincial flyhalf Naas Olivier and fullback Wilco de Wet will be the key players to watch in the Impalas attack. The kick-off will be at 16:00 at the Alberton Stadium on May 3, unless the game will be moved due to the possible long weekend as a result of the public holiday on May 1.
