Newly Crowned Miss SA gets into Triple Crown Spirit

Newly appointed Miss South Africa, Rolene Strauss was present at the SA Derby Barrier Draw.

The Barriers Draw took place on Thursday April 17 at Turffontein Racecourse where the running horses where link to their community and charity. The SASCOC Triple Crown consists of three legs and on Saturday April 26 the third leg of this prestigious event will take place right on your doorstep.

Winning horse of two of the three legs, Louis The King, was drawn with Media Partner, Caxton South and the Portuguese community together with their charity, Bienvenue Shelter.

In the other Media Partner draw, Get It South, was drawn with their running horse, Mercado. The community is Scotland and their charity, St Mary Children Home.

If Louis The King takes full honours on Saturday, he will be one of two horses in the history of horseracing to win the Triple Crown. Chestnut was the first horse to notch up all three the crowns.

Phumelela Gaming will be donating a total of R150 000 shared between the various nominated charities. Beneficiaries include St. Mary’s Children’s Home, Reach for a Dream, Animal Anti-Cruelty, The Star Seaside Fund, Operation Snowball and The Highveld Horse Care Unit.

There certainly is a sense of royalty in the air as favourite Louis the King, having won the first two legs of the series is poised to become the second horse in history to win South Africa’s Triple Crown, earning him a cool R2 million bonus and catapulting him into the international spotlight.

“The anticipation of driving home in one of three brand new VW Polos, the incredible variety of cuisine from around the world, FREE entry to the race track and the possibility of Louis the King taking the Triple Crown has ensured incredible interest in the day itself.  We are expecting record attendance at what promises to be a not to be missed family day out” enthused Michael Varney, Phumelela’s Marketing Manager.

With over 50 Ferrari’s on display, vibrant live entertainment, the thrill of live horse racing, a free carnival for the kids and gourmet cuisine from countries such as Portugal, Greece, China, India, Lebanon, Italy, Scotland, Serbia, Spain and South Africa there really is no better way to spend a Saturday.

Gates open at 11:00, entry and parking is FREE.
