Vodacom cup rugby returns to Alberton

Alberton rugby fans could be treated to another feast of great rugby when the Vodacom Cup comes to town.

ALBERTON – The highlight of the previous rugby year on Alberton fields was the unforgettable Vodacom Cup game at the Alberton Stadium between the Golden Lions and the Limpopo Blue Bulls. Now, Vodacom Cup rugby will be back at Alberton on Saturday April 26.

Last year’s encounter delivered records galore, when the Golden Lions recorded the highest score in first class rugby namely 162-3. Alberton spectators were eyewitnesses to several record-breaking performances on that memorable day, of which Anthony Volmink’s nine tries were legendary stuff. The Lions then continued on that winning note to take the cup.

Now, that memorable day could be repeated when the defending Vodacom Cup champions, Golden Lions, will tackle this year’s undefeated Northern log leaders the Pumas. The kick-off is at 15:00 this Saturday at the Alberton Stadium.

The Golden Lions started this Vodacom Cup season on a rather shaky note, by winning with a mere one point against both the Leopards and the Falcons. Again the Blue Bulls at Loftus Versfeld stumbled 20-22, but the fourth fixture against the Griffons brought another tough victory 40-37.

Another defeat came Alberton’s way in the fifth round against Griquas, when they lost 18-35 but gave a good second-half performance after trailing 18-33 at halftime. On the same day the Pumas, on top of the log, proved to be unstoppable by demolishing Limpopo Blue Bulls 88-0.
