Future hockey star ready to shine

There must be some correlation between Alberton origins and hockey achievements at the highest level.

ALBERTON – The reason being, the emerging of another future hockey star out of Alberton hot on the heels of current SA Protea star Bernie Caston.

Bernie was born and bred in Alberton through primary and high schools in Alberton. Eighteen years ago, the same scenario was applicable to Brad Milne, South Africa’s one goalkeeper at the Olympic Games in Atlanta. At present Bernie is involved in a series of international games against Belgium, Scotland, Argentina and Australia in preparation for this year’s Commonwealth Games.

But back to the future, the emerging rising star is Jason Kearns from Alberton Hockey Club, who was born in 1990 and started playing hockey at the age of 14 in 2004 for Hoërskool Dinamika and from 2006 to 2008 for Dinamika’s first team. He was first recognised by his selection for District 6 hockey and also at the age of 16 in 2006 he played himself into Alberton Hockey Club’s first team. This will be his ninth year as Alberton player.

Jason also played indoor hockey from 2009 to 2013, with his ultimate highlight selection at the age of 24 for Eastern Gauteng indoor hockey teams to the interprovincial tournament in Durban, Kwa-Zulu Natal at the beginning of March.

Over and above his own hockey playing commitments, Jason is also coaching Hoërskool Alberton hockey.

For Jason Kearns, who has an absolute passion for hockey, his goal is “hoping to make the SA team one day, be it outdoor or indoor”. Good luck and go for it, Jason!
