Alberton teams in sevens

The heat was on at the Alberton Stadium during the first weekend of March to crown the Lions top sevens team of 2014.

ALBERTON – During the Saturday and Sunday, 53 games were played in the senior and junior sections, where six winners were crowned as follows:

Juniors: Bowls: Winner Roodepoort where Alberton B was runner-up.

Plate: Winner Khosa, runner-up Jabulani.

Cup: Winner UJ, runner-up Raiders.

Seniors: Bowls: Winner Pirates, runner up Germiston-Simmer.

Plate: Winner Raiders, runner-up Alberton.

Cup: Winner UJ, runner-up Randfontein.

The Golden Lions sevens tournament started on the Saturday morning with the opening senior game, with Kagiso the winners 29-10 against Khosa. The juniors kicked off with Raiders 28-0 victory over Harlequins. In this junior section Alberton A and Alberton B commenced their sevens venture with mixed success, namely Alberton A was victorious with 28-7 over Khoza, but Alberton B lost 0-20 to Wanderers.

However, the latter recovered well to reach the bowls semi-finals where they eliminated Johannesburg Police 12-5. In the final, Alberton made a good comeback but was beaten by Roodepoort. In the junior cup semi-finals UJ outplayed Alberton A 14-0, after Alberton A completely demolished Wanderers 22-7 in the quarter finals.

In the senior section, Alberton A lost to Randfontein 12-17 in the cup-plate quarter final, but defeated Jabulani 17-0 in the plate semi-finals, for which they qualified to meet Raiders in the plate final where they lost 0-30.

Germiston – Simmer eliminated Alberton B 24-0 in the senior bowls semi-final to meet Pirates in the final, where the final winner was Pirates 17-7.

U.J emerged as the top Golden Lions sevens team of 2014 and defeating open club Randfontein by 25-5 in the final, with their captain, Marius Laubser, honoured as the player of the tournament.
