Keith Horne’s unbelievable golden golf moment

The best golf story of the year was Keith Horne’s golden golf moment which was one of the RECORD’s first big sport stories of the year early in January.

ALBERTON – Among the ten top golden moments to be remembered, Alberton’s Keith Horne slotted into the seventh top golden moment, under the heading “Horne’s pair of aces better than a golden flush” in a golf publication.

His almost impossible feat to achieve two hole-in-ones on the same hole in two days at the Alfred Dunhill championship at Malelane, earned him that honour in a year that SA golfers such as Ernie Els, Brandon Grace and Louis Oosthuizen dominated the world golf scene.

The golfing press described that unforgettable moment as follows, “Amazingly, Keith Horne aced the par-3 twelfth hole with an eight-iron in both the second and third rounds of the Alfred Dunhill championship.

“He was gutted because a car was only up for grabs for a hole-in-one on the last day in the fourth round.

“There was a happy ending though, as tournament sponsor Johann Rupert and BMW shared the costs and decided to give him a brand new BMW Active Hybrid 5 anyway.”

Keith’s comment was simply “It is unbelievable.” His second hole-in-one was the seventh perfect stroke of his life and the fourth as a professional.

He made Alberton so proud by finishing that tournament championship in joint seventh position on 278, with rounds of 70, 69, 68 and 71.

He was also joint second South African with Richard Sterne, behind overall winner Charl Schwartzel. If it was still in the time of the Alberton Civic Merit Awards a decade ago, then Keith could have walked away with the Alberton sportsman of the year-award.
