Gold for rowers at World Champs

Despite having limited time this year to train together, because they were 12 500km apart, they still took gold!

VINCENT Breet from Alberton and his partner David Hunt won the gold medal in the men’s pairs event at the recent World u.23 World Championship recently held in Austria.

They were honoured at a Gala Dinner recently held by the Ministry of Sport and Recreation in Cape Town.

Prior to their World Championship success, Vincent and David placed second at the Henley Royal Regatta, behind the current World champions and Olympic Gold medallists, the “Kiwi Pair”, who now hold the world record for the longest undefeated run in the pairs event. The South African pair placed seventh in the World Senior Championship in Lucerne, just two weeks before their big win in Austria. Last year they won the Silver medal in this event. They have their sights firmly set on Rio 2016.

The pair had limited time this year to train together, because they were 12 500km apart. David is completing his Engineering degree at Tukkies, while Vincent returned this week to Harvard University, to start his end-of-year collegiate rowing season. He was the first freshman to ever make the Harvard Varsity First VIII.
