Pena retains belt

EFC AFRICA 21 took place on Thursday July 25 at the Big Top Arena, Carnival City.

DEMARTE Pena retained his featherweight EFC AFRICA belt defeating his opponent Abdul Hassan.

In front of a sell-out crowd all bouts exceeded all expectations.

Undefeated Pena won the bout after Hassan failed to appear for the second round.

The champion delivered a dominant and brutal first round, initially making use of stinging leg kicks before clinching with the challenger, taking him down, and controlling with brutal ground and pound. The break between the first and the second revealed torn ankle ligaments for Hassan, forcing him to throw in the towel.

Sors Grobbelaar defeated Bernardo Mikixi by TKO in the third round, thereby securing the number one contender spot for the heavyweight title. He can now challenge Andrew van Zyl for the title.

Crowd favourite, and former heavyweight champion Ruan Potts made his first re-appearance in the Hexagon after his EFC AFRICA 18 loss to Andrew van Zyl. His opponent was Egyptian Mahmoud Hassan. Potts won the fight by applying a heel hook which ended the fight in 37 seconds. He won submission of the night award for this attempt.

Wilhelm Strauss from Alberton and Lance Ceronio won the Fight of the Night award.

Francois Groenewald, a renowned BJJ practitioner faced Gareth Buirski at featherweight. Buirski is well known for his brutal overhand right KO of Markus Taljaard and tonight performed a similar feat after stuffing Groenewald’s takedown attempt, dropping him with a right hook and following up with a barrage of punches that left Groenewald stunned.
