Julie Maule: Five days into our new life

Our own Bag Lady chats with our readers all the way from Darwen, Lancashire.

Fifth day in Darwen, Lancashire and it’s cloudy with a weak sun making an appearance every now and then and a high of 8°C. Very different from Glenvista.

We are trying to get used to our “new” life in the UK, but with all the challenges this dreadful virus brings I think it’s harder than it would have been under normal circumstances.

We are privileged to be living with our daughter and son-in-law and we are all making the very best of a lockdown lifestyle and situation. Everything is different, the kitchen/diner and now an office for them.

Today, we ventured out to the post office, Colin wore his face mask just in case.

The town was very quiet and the only queue outside a shop was for Boots Pharmacy.

The restaurants, coffee shops and small pubs in the main street were all closed.

We managed to find some South African wine.

We went into Sainsbury’s to buy a few food essentials.

Strict regulations, lines two metres apart on the floor where shoppers had to wait for their turn to pay and announcements over the tannoy system every few minutes reminding shoppers to keep two metres apart from each other.

Walking along the street, instead of being friendly and saying good morning or hello, as most people do here, you move well away as others do too.

It’s so strange and I felt guilty as though I’m being unfriendly.

People standing two metres apart waiting to enter the pharmacy at Boots.

Shopping gives you a new perspective too.

Back in SA I’d go to the shops in my car whereas now I walk to the local shops.

Thankfully I’m in and out quickly, no time for browsing, so not too many goods to carry. It’s uphill all the way home.

Yes, it’s a new life for us but again, it’s a “new” life for us all.

Keep safe!

Julie
