Worried about crime in our town

I wish someone could explain the violence behind these crimes - the disregard for life in general.

I am an avid reader of the RECORD and felt it necessary to put pen to paper about crime in our town.

I still remember the ‘good’ old days when an attempted hijacking made for front page news of our local newspaper. And back then we were all shocked and outraged that such a thing could even happen in the streets of our town.

However, today, if you are not almost beaten to death, or worse, shot and killed in an attack or hijacking, chances are that you won’t even make the first three pages of the paper – or not make the headlines at all.

I wish someone could explain the violence behind these crimes – the disregard for life in general.

I am of the opinion that the problem is rooted in slack, or the lack of law enforcement – by-laws are not enforced, criminal laws are not enforced. People get arrested just to get bail and then to be rearrested for the same crimes.

Do by-laws even still exist? Why do I have to stand back and let the loiterers sit around (and making a mess on top of it all) on the pavement I keep clean and tidy. Why do I have to live in fear that this might be a spotter for some other more violent criminal lurking around?

I am also of the opinion that SAPS hide the facts from us. I wish the true reflection about crime in our country could be published far and wide.

But what do we expect if our president blatantly denies burning issues like farm murders? Surely we can then not expect a true reflection of what is really happening in our country, right on our doorsteps?

Why do we have to live in prisons while criminals are free to roam our streets – there is an obvious problem here but still no answers to the problem.

Bottom line is – we need proper law enforcement in our country with a no-nonsense attitude from those enforcing the law – people who will serve the citizens of this country with pride again.

Time for the truth, Florentia
