The veld in Randhart, where Swartkoppies and Jacqueline roads meet (across Potgieter Road), is in a horrible state.
A massive amount of water is wasted here after a big municipal underground water pipe was damaged.
The gushing water forms a pool inside metre-deep holes that have been dug in the ground. Many litres of water have been wasted so far and it continues to be wasted every day.
I’ve called the municipality and councillors, but they haven’t fixed it – the only way they’ve “addressed” the problem is by digging a trench that leads to the stormwater drain so that the water can travel and waste away there.
The danger that this situation poses is that anyone who walks through the veld can fall into the deep, water-filled holes and drown. What’s worse is that there are electric wires and even an electric box beneath the water, and if those are live wires, it will be a catastrophe if someone falls into the surrounding water.
There are homeless people who live close to these water-filled holes and I imagine that they use this water source, but it’s very dangerous and these people might get serious electrical shocks.
I don’t understand why this is not a priority to the EMM or councillors and why it’s being ignored. We are in a water crisis – we cannot afford to waste so much water every day! Each day that this problem is ignored, thousands of litres of precious water go to waste and people’s lives are in danger.
Can the council and municipality please do something to solve this?!
