Real estate agencies advertise unethically

“They should seek approval before distributing flyers and pamphlets in private properties.”

I wish to draw attention to an increasingly annoying trend from various real estate agents in the Alberton area, regarding the way they advertise their services.

Recently, they started sticking their advertisements on my gate, using my property to advertise their services to people passing in street. They should really put their ads in mailboxes (the reason mailboxes are there). It annoys me that someone thinks they can just come and stick something to my property without my consent and I have been contemplating how to address this problem.

Leaflet advertising is well-defined for estate agents under the Practical Guidelines on Ethical Advertising, page 2 (2011) under Section 4 of the document. Section 4.1 states: “Flyers and pamphlets to homes and other premises must be properly distributed without being visible to members of the public other than the intended recipient(s). This is to avoid the build-up of distributed materials within public view when owners are away.

“It is good practice not to distribute flyers and pamphlets on vehicles as it would likely result in causing public nuisance via littering. Estate agents and salespersons are required to comply with existing laws and seek requisite approval before distributing the flyers and pamphlets in private properties especially in condominiums.”

I hope those real estate agencies read this letter and take note that they are advertising unethically.
