Invited to claim from EMM insurance

A resident got sick due to raw sewage in his yard.

On June 28, the RECORD reported on a man who fell ill as a result of a constant leak of raw sewage in his back yard at 6 Bergh Street. According to him, this has been a problem for years. He tried to clean the mess up himself and was later diagnosed with an E. coli infection.

A drain in front of the resident’s house keeps on blocking, which leads to the sewage overflowing into his yard. “I have contacted everyone, I have seven reference numbers and it is as if there is no reaction. When workers do pitch up, they repair it temporarily,” he said.

PROBLEM: This is how the sewage is flowing into the resident’s yard.

The RECORD asked for comments from Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM ) and they have replied as follows:

“The sewer blockage was opened on Thursday, June 22 by a jet truck and was blocked again on Tuesday, June 27. A team was again sent to unclog the second blockage.

“A CCTV camera was used on the sewer line to identify the cause of the frequent blockage. As soon as a report is submitted by the contractor with findings, corrective technical measures will be taken to rectify the problem. The complainant is advised to submit a quantified claim and to submit it to the Insurance Section on the Ground Floor 68 Woburn Avenue, Benoni,” said Themba Gadebe, Spokesperson / Senior Media Manager from EMM.
