I love Brackenhurst – our chirpy bird paradise

"It’s an awesome eco-system amongst the trees here and I plead that people do not cut them down for this very reason."

I am so privileged to live in the suburb of Brackenhurst and in particular, in a special short street, only about a kilometre long, which delights me every day.

Every morning, on my way to work, I see the following birds: pigeons, starlings, wild finches, hoepoes, hadeda ibises, black and white woodpeckers, mossies, Indian mynahs, crowned plovers, dikkops (in the evening), mousebirds and weavers.

One might think: “Oh, but most of these are just common birds!” But, to put this into perspective, I recently spent a few days in Zambia near the Vic Falls and I was perturbed to note that I did not see any birds – not in the sky, not in the nature reserve, not on the ground – not anywhere!

I would like also to thank those special people in my area who must be feeding the birds, otherwise why would there be so many happy little birds going about their business? It’s an awesome eco-system among the trees here and I plead with people not to cut them down for this very reason. Thank you, Brackenhurst!

Grateful
