Alberton resident concerned over planned cell tower

I’m not sure about the legality, but I believe the application from the company has to include any objections from the residents.

I am very worried about a notice that I received the other day.

The notice pertains to an application for building plan approval for a cellular mast on erf 1663, Verwoerdpark, Extension Three.

The document states that we have 28 days to submit objections regarding construction of the above-mentioned cellular tower.

The document (copy in RECORD’s possession) is dated ’20 January’, but I only received the document on Friday, February 3. This means we only had seven days to make the necessary submissions in writing, together with the grounds therefor, to the Head of Department: Building Control Division (Alberton), Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality.

I have spoken to a woman from the company tasked with drafting the plans and sending out the notices and, according to them, 20 notice letters have been posted.

I then spoke to residents in my complex, as well as at Serengeti and Casanita, at the time of my enquiry and none of the others have received any notices.

There is also another complex and other properties adjacent to erf 1663, and I am certain that they have not been notified either.

I’m not sure about the legality, but I believe the application from the company has to include any objections from the residents.

The email address specified in the notice header “info@infraplan.co.za” is an admin address. Objections should be emailed to “pp@infraplan.co.za” or “gladys@infraplan.co.za” if required.

RECORD contacted the company in question, as well as the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality for comment, but received none.
