Grass cut, but just left

Please could someone tell me whether it’s the responsibility of the school to clean up, since they are the ones mowing the lawn around the school or could the school please contact the local municipality to come and do the clean-up afterwards.

I am a home owner in Vermooten Street, Brackenhurst.

As residents at the back end of Glenview Primary School, we have come to terms with the fact that during school holidays the lawn remains uncut until a day or two prior to the school’s re-opening.

However, once the lawn has now been mowed on the pavements all around the school, the dead grass cuttings are left to dry and no clean-up is ever done. One cannot even see where the pavement ends and the road starts.

With rains falling and water having nowhere to go, this dead grass now blocks the stormwater drains. From the corner of Vermooten up the one-way along the side of Glenview Primary School in Pieter Street, the condition of the road looks terrible.

Please could someone tell me whether it’s the responsibility of the school to clean up, since they are the ones mowing the lawn around the school or could the school please contact the local municipality to come and do the clean-up afterwards. I remember the municipality used to ensure that grass never grew over the pavement into the road, leaving the pavements clearly visible. This looks appalling and as a resident, I am not happy with the unkempt condition of the streets around the school, year after year.

I checked again recently while walking my dog and all around the school, tree branches are cut and never collected. They have one dustbin on the corner of Lotus and Madeliefie Roads (the other one-way alongside the school) which overflows and I have yet to see it being cleaned…. This unfortunately faces my house.

The RECORD contacted the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality and Glenview Primary for comment.

According to Themba Gadebe, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality, the grass along the side of Glenview Primary School in Pieter Street is not the responsibility of the City’s Metro Parks. “According to our grass cutting policy, school sidewalks must be maintained by the schools. “Please refer your enquiry to the school responsible for the maintaining of that specific area,” says Gadebe.

Glenview Primary School did not respond to our requests for comment.
