Resident suspicious of ‘workers’

I am a bit concerned due to the fact that upon returning from holiday I discovered a letter with an Ekurhuleni letter head on it, stating that I need to change my prepaid meter.

I am a bit concerned, due to the fact that, upon returning from holiday, I discovered a letter on an Ekurhuleni letterhead, stating that I need to change my prepaid meter.

Although the information seemed to be in order, my electricity box is in a general unit on the street corner and, secondly, I did not request a prepaid meter.

My question here is: has there been a general notice from the municipality advising all ratepayers that meter boards will be replaced by prepaid meters and, secondly, should there not be a notice from the municipality placed in the same envelope as one’s monthly statement?

In a newsletter received from them recently, there is an article, “Watch out for imposters”, and this referred to imposters selling prepaid meters.

Please assist me in this regard.

Uncertain ratepayer

The RECORD contacted the EMM and they commented as follows:

The City of Ekurhuleni is currently in the process of replacing old meter boxes with more secure ones with protective structures.

Customers are notified that the city will be replacing their meter with a prepayment meter in line with the revenue enhancement objectives of installing prepaid meters.

Meters that are being replaced are those that failed to register consumption, damaged and not easily accessible ones.

Meters are replaced at no cost to the customer, however, the city also provides retrofit meters where the customer applies and pays for the prepayment of the meter.

Customers in Alberton and Thokoza who receive notification letters may verify the authenticity of such a letter by contacting the Energy department on 011 999 2525, 011 999 5295 or 011 999 2531 during office hours.
