Resident accuses police of corruption and unbefitting conduct

This is blatant corruption and unbefitting conduct from the very people who are supposed to be fighting these ills in our society.

I would like to share the following incident, which happened in the Alberton Boulevard on September 9, at about 21:40, with residents.

A cop and his female partner parked us in (blocked us off so we couldn’t leave our parking spot) and insisted we give them money for food, since they were tired from constant emergencies since 16:00, but the ATM wasn’t working so we had almost nothing.

My friend had R40 which they took for “food” and as a “protection” fee, since they watched over us while we tried to draw money.

They also said it was a fee to escort us to the New Redruth Village Nedbank ATM, which they didn’t do. We were finally allowed to leave after my friend showed them his empty wallet.

I went to the police station and was told to call the station commander, but, when I did, he told me he wasn’t working that day, even after I told him the men at the station told me to call him directly.

I have the licence plate number, so let’s see if anything happens.

This is blatant corruption and unbefitting conduct from the very people who are supposed to be fighting these ills in our society.

Disgusted citizen

The RECORD contacted the Alberton Police Commander and the spokesperson for the station, but no comment has been given.
